More of the Week's Highlights

Heat index 105°... Who Knows how hot that translates inside a school building!

Continued painting. Classrooms have gone from dark, dungeon like rooms to bright environments conducive to learning. Hallways and doorways have been transformed. The principal, Mrs.Jones is thrilled to see her school become a place of beauty. The new paint on the walls reminds us each day of how God covered our ugliness and sin with the blood of his Son. We were transformed into a place of beauty.

The school mayor, Blanche Hogquist, fed us New York pizza today. She is a Jewish lady and loads of fun. Today she shared with us that she wished she "had" what we had! She said she was "jealous" of a faith that kept us smiling and singing in the hot building. And, we paid our way to New York, to boot! Steve Kelly, a local church planter, asked us to continue to pray for Blanche. He thinks that the mission of the Paint The Town volunteers is to be a living witness to Blanche. He is going to keep us informed as to how this turns out... we may not see the fruit of our labor this visit, but Blanche is truly recognizing that her life is lacking the joy that comes from knowing Christ. Please join us in prayer for Blanche. God is seeking her out, and I don't think she has the strength to keep running from Him much longer.

After our pizza lunch today, Mrs. Jones sang To God Be the Glory as a continual thank you to us for following the calling to come and be part of this project.

Oscar, the Project Site manager talked to Kelly Carter about painting a mural outside on the playground. Kelly agreed and designed a great picture to draw and paint. She picked a team and the project began. The local children are so excited to see the mural going up. They come from everywhere to help paint! They express their excitement at coming to school in the fall to see the new look of their School. The mural is showing the community that Kairos cares. Watch for pictures coming soon!

We had an opportunity to be on Good Morning America as "extra" crowd and it was fun! Charlie Gibson spent time during the breaks talking and having fun with the Team. He signed everyone's t-shirt and took pictures with us as a group. We saw Serena and Venus Williams, and witnessed Barbara Walter's "final" time to host GMA. Did you see our shining faces?

We have seen and experienced many new things. We have made new friends and have grown closer as a team. God continues to bless our efforts each day! To God Be The Glory!

Seeing the Big Picture

Team member Amanda Bradley had this to say about the trip:
It has finally been impressed upon me that our team is like Joshua and Caleb, sent in by Moses to scout out the Promised Land. We will go in, see the giants, but see the overwhelming goodness that God has for us there as well, and we will go back to the elders and report what we have seen. Yes, we will be doing visible and tangible good works for this middle school and this area, but our experience will be our own lives changed, and the lives of the people we encounter through this trip- both in NYC and back here in TN. The actual physical labor we are doing is only a small part of the big picture. God has much bigger things for us I think, and I'm excited to see what that is.

Monday - The Work Begins!

We arrived at the school, MS 117, ready to paint. The weather was 90° inside the school—no air conditioning or elevators to take us to the upper floors. Our goal is to lose 100 pounds collectively as a team!

At lunchtime we met the principal, Mrs. Jones, who led our Team in a devotion. She sang I Love You With The Love of The Lord as a thank you to our Team. It was definitely a blessing to us, but she continued by telling us how she knew God had sent us to bless her and the school, and that after we were gone the fruits of our labor would continue to bless all who entered the building.

The school mayor, Blanche, welcomed us with open arms, and is going to fix us New York pizza for lunch this week! We will have an opportunity to share our faith with Blanche, so please join us in prayer that God will present us with many opportunities to share the gospel with her.

We painted in Room 222—only the "elder" members of the team understood the significance of the room number! Young people!

New Hope New York had a communication breakdown and lacked staff to run a Vacation Bible School in Queens. Their office called on us for 5 volunteers. Five from the Team stepped up to the plate and caught the subway for the 1-hour journey to Queens. They enjoyed working with many ethnic cultures, and it was a great experience. One team member had the awesome joy of leading a young Hindu girl, Hema, to know Jesus. Not a coincidence that our team is here... All things work together for good! Got to bed late rejoicing with the Team!

On Tuesday we will continue to paint. It is supposed to be over 90° again... stay tuned and pray for a cold front!

Saturday and Sunday

The team arrived in New York at 7pm on Saturday. We ate dinner together and then enjoyed some of the sights in Manhattan.

On Sunday morning we had breakfast at the Red Flame Diner, and enjoyed a fantastic worship experience at the Brooklyn Tabernacle. Babbie Mason sang—everyone was moved by the experience. The choir sang My Life Is In your Hands. Isn't that our choir's song? Little Italy and Chinatown lived up to our expectations in the evening. Some folks enjoyed Broadway shows, and others spent their money wisely on Canal street.

We leave on Saturday!

Please pray for us as we seek do God's will on this trip to New York City. We will be partnering with New Hope New York, participating in their Paint The Town program.
